uniRank Provides a Different Perspective on Global Universities

uniRank is a web-based ranking that is complementary to a search engine. It is currently based on an algorithm that includes five web metrics derived from four web intelligence sources: Moz Domain Authority, which replaced Google PageRank in 2016, Alexa Global Rank, Similar Web Global Rank, Majestic Referring Domains, and Majestic Trust Flow.

This is a measure not of research or teaching but of web presence and popularity. It is noticeable, however, that the position of universities in this ranking is usually quite similar to that in research based global rankings. At the top, the first five universities are MIT, Harvard, Stanford, Berkeley and Cornell.

Despite this some previously underrated universities have moved ahead of elite institutions. In the world league table Penn State University and the University of Minnesota are ranked higher than Johns Hopkins and the University of Pennsylvania.

In India the country ranking is headed by the University of Delhi which is followed by five Indian Institutes of Technology, commonly regarded as the elite of Indian higher education. The Indian top ten is filled out with less known institutions such as Narsee Monjee Institute of Management and Higher Studies, Savitribai Phule Pune University, and VIT University.

In France the University ty of Strasbourg holds first place ahead of the University of Paris, Paris-Saclay and the Sorbonne.

In Nigeria the University of Benin and Covenant University have overtaken the traditional leaders, the University of Ibadan and Ahmadu Bello University, traditionally the country’s leading universities.
