Transparent Ranking Indicator from Webometrics

The Cybermetrics Lab, a research group affiliated to the Consejo Superior de Investigaciones Científicas (CSIC) in Spain, has just announced the latest edition of its Transparent Ranking, which is currently in the Beta stage and which will be incorporated at the end of this month in the Ranking Web of Universities.

This indicator is based on the top 210 public individual profiles in Google Scholar Citations, with the top 20 excluded to remove outliers. Several major universities including Harvard, Oxford, and Berkeley have been excluded. This may be because of bad practices such as including non-individual profiles or authors from other institutions. At present the creation and maintenance of individual profiles is voluntary so this combined with the prevalence of such practices may mean the indicator is not completely accurate.

The largest number of profiles are from the USA, followed by China. Iran, Brazil and France all have a relatively large number of profiles. It is also interesting that Nigeria has more profiles than either Canada or Australia.

The current top ten, all in North America, are

  1. University of California San Diego
  2. Yale University
  3. Cornell University
  4. University of Toronto
  5. University of Madison Wisconsin
  6. Washington University Saint Louis
  7. University of Florida
  8. New York University
  9. Carnegie Mellon University
  10. Johns Hopkins University.
