Scimago rankings: Universities Lagging behind for Research and Innovation

The Scimago Institutions Rankings are produced by the Scimago Lab and analyse data relevant to scientific and online reputation. In addition to conventional metrics related to research they also measure innovation and societal influence. There are separate rankings for universities and other institutions.

The overall 2020 rankings, as in previous years, are led by the Chinese Academy of Sciences. The rest of the top twenty is dominated by non-university institutions including the Chinese Ministry of Education, the US Department of Health and Human Sciences, Facebook, Google and Microsoft.

Within the university sector, the top five overall are:

  1. Harvard University
  2. Harvard Medical School,
  3. Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT)
  4. Stanford University
  5. Tsinghua University.

The innovation rankings are based on three indicators relating to patents. The top five in all sectors are:

  1. Chinese Academy of Sciences
  2. Samsung Corp
  3. Samsung Electronics, South Korea
  4. IBM United States
  5. Regeneron Pharmaceuticals Inc.

The top university for innovation is Harvard in 10th place.

The Societal rankings are based on web size, back links and altmetrics which include PLumX Metrics, and documents in Mendeley. The top five are:

  1. Centre National de la Recherche Scientifique
  2. Facebook Inc, United States
  3. Facebook Inc
  4. Chinese Academy of Sciences
  5. Harvard University.
