Nature Index: Chinese Research Supremacy

The Nature Index is a ranking of institutions and countries according to publications in a group of highly selective science journals. This year’s institutional table is headed by the Chinese Academy of Science followed by Harvard University and the Max Planck Society of Germany. The leading countries are the USA, China and Germany.

The Index publishes tables going back to 2016 revealing the outlines of changes over the medium term. Chinese universities have risen steadily: Peking from 14th place to 10th, Tsinghua from 28th to 12th, Xiamen from 100th to 62nd.

The lists of rising universities since last year is especially interesting. The top 43 rising academic institutions are all Chinese. The best non-Chinese universities are Colorado State University, Cornell University, the University of Oslo, the University of Vienna, and the Indian Institute of Science Education and Research Kolkata.
