European engineering education EngiRank 2023 published

The European Ranking of Engineering Programs or EngiRankwas inaugurated in Brussel 17th November in presence of universities and European engineering organizations. The top place went to the Technical University of Denmark (DTU) followed by Delft University of Technology (Netherlands) and KU Leuven (Belgium).

Other universities in the top ten (including ex aequo): Technical University of Munich (Germany), Politechnic University of Milan (Italy), Ghent University (Belgium), Eindhoven University of Technology (Netherlands), Karlsruhe University of Technology (Germany), RWTH Aahen University (Germany), KTH Royal Institute of Technology and Aalto University (Finland).

The methodology developed for EngiRank, in addition to traditional indicators like publications and citations or internationalization, took into account: collaboration with industry, joint research with business, patents, contribution to sustainable development goals, participation in the EU programs (Horizon and Erasmus+), and engineering accreditations (ENAEE, ABET).

Equally, if not more important than the overall institutional ranking are seven “by subject” rankings covering most important fields of engineering: Chemical; Civil; Electrical, Electronics and IT; Environmental; Mechanic; Material and Medical.

“I appreciate the EngiRank initiative… I believe that subject rankings are more relevant for our university than world university rankings” – commented Prof. Tim van der Hagen, rector of TU Delft (the Netherlands).

The work on EngiRank had been preceded by broad consultations with academics, engineering organization and the industry.

“All European countries need top-class engineers, this is a need of utmost urgency. Engineering education plays a key role in ensuring the sustainable development of Europe. It is essential to increase use of innovative technologies and educate creative engineers who can use science to solve problems” – said Waldemar Siwinski, founder of the Perspektywy Education Foundation.

EngiRank has been prepared by the team of the Perspektywy Education Foundation supported by the Poland’s National Agency for the Erasmus+ Program and the European Solidarity Corps (FRSE).

EngiRank will be helpful during the choosing study abroad and in finding an internship under the Erasmus+ Program” – said Pawel Poszytek, director of FRSE.

The data for the ranking came from the Elsevier’s Scopus, European Patent Office PATSTAT, Horizon Europe, accrediting organizations for engineering studies (ABET, ENAEE), and the Erasmus+ database.

EngiRank is a PRO BONO ranking, it has been made with public benefit in mind.
