Japan Uses Rankings to Attract Top Talent

The Japanese Justice Ministry has announced that it will introduce a new visa programme, Japan System for Future Creation Individual Visa (J-Find). This will allow graduates of leading foreign universities to enter Japan to search for a job for up to two years.

To qualify for the visa, applicants must have received a degree within the last five years from a university in the top 100 of at least two of the following rankings: the QS World University Rankings, the Times Higher Education (THE) World University Rankings, and the Academic Ranking of World Universities (Shanghai Rankings).

A spokesman for the ministry said that “we understand that they’re commonly used rankings and we believe they have credibility”.

This development follows the announcement of a similar move by the UK government to attract “High Potential Individuals” who have graduated from top 50 universities.
