The Ranking Web of Universities, better known as Webometrics, uses webometric and bibliometric data from Majestic, Google Scholar, and Scopus. The current indicators are:
- Visibility; external networks linking to webpages; data derived from Majestic (50% weighting)
- Transparency/Openness; number of citations from top 310 authors (excluding top20 outliers); data derived from Google Scholar (10% weighting)
- Excellence; number of papers in top 10% most cited in 27 disciplines; data provided by Scimago from Scopus (40% weighting).
In previous years Webometrics has provided full rankings on its front page with rankings. This year, unfortunately, there is only a beta version available for download that provides the overall world rank.
The top five universities in the world are :
- Harvard
- Stanford University
- Massachusetts Institute of Technology
- University of Oxford
- University of California Berkeley
The top university in each of these regions is:
Africa; University of Cape Town
Arab Region; King Saud University
Asia; Tsinghua University
Continental Europe; ETH Zurich
Latin America; Universidade de São Paulo
Oceania; University of Melbourne.
