US News Graduate School Rankings

US News have published the latest edition of their Best Graduate Schools, which have been eagerly awaited in the USA and beyond. The Law School and Business School rankings in particular are closely followed by students, teachers, and the media, and have often been the source of fierce controversy.

This year’s rankings have seen a few methodological tweaks but there are no substantial changes. The methodology is very different for the various disciplines. The Best Law Schools rankings give a weighting of 60% to those metrics that deal with the employment of graduates. The ranking of subjects in Fine Arts, Health, Library and Information Studies, Public Affairs, Science, and Social Sciences and Humanities is based entirely on ratings by academic peers.

The Law School rankings are led by Stanford University and Yale University in joint first place, followed by the University of Chicago. Meanwhile the University of Pennsylvania is first for Best Business School with Northwestern University and Stanford University in second place.

The ranking of Best Medical Schools: Research was done quite differently. Schools were divided into four tiers with 16 institutions classified as Tier One.

Harvard continues to lead among the Biological Sciences although Carnegie Mellon University is dominant in Computer Science and MIT holds first place for Engineering.
