University Ranking by Academic Performance (URAP) is published by the Informatics Institute at the Middle East Technical University in Ankara. It is based entirely on objective public data and now ranks 3,000 universities.
It is not as well-known as some other world rankings, but its methodology is generally reliable and consistent, and it is beginning to attract a broader audience in Asian and Muslim counties.
There are six indicators:
Article: Articles published in journals in the first three quartiles for Journal Impact Factor in 2023 (21% weighting)
Citation: Number of citations in 2019-2023 for total documents published in the same period (10% weighting)
Total Documents: All documents published in 2019-2023 (21% weighting)
Article Impact Total: Normalized citations per paper multiplied by number of publications paper in 24 subject areas (18% weighting)
Citation Impact Total: Normalized citations per paper multiplied by the number of citations in 24 subject areas (15% weighting)
International Collaboration: Total number of articles published in collaboration with international universities (15% weighting).
All data is derived from InCites.
Harvard remains in first place overall and in all six indicators. It is followed by Université Paris Cité, the University of Toronto, University College London, and Zhejiang University.
There are some notable improvements by Chinese and Arab universities. Central South University has risen from the 33rd rank to 19th, Sun Yat Sen University from 20th to 12th, King Saud University from 94th to 66th, and Qatar University from 440th to 390th.
In contrast, leading Russian universities, afflicted by war and sanctions, have fallen: Lomonosov Moscow State University from 244th to 315th, Sechenov First Moscow State Medical University form 486th to 570th, Moscow Institute of Physics and Technology from 543rd to 687th, and Saint Petersburg State University from 565th to 605th.
