THE World Rankings: Australian and British Universities Decline

Times Higher Education (THE) have just published the latest edition of their World University Rankings (WUR). The University of Oxford remains at the top of the ranking, although there have been some significant changes further down.

The rankings are based on 17 indicators grouped in 5 “pillars” as follows:

Teaching (weighting 29.5%); Teaching reputation, Staff student ratio,  Doctorates bachelor’s ratio, Doctorates awarded academic staff ratio, Institutional income

Research environment (29%); Research reputation, Research income. Research productivity

Research quality (30%); Citation impact, Research strength, Research excellence, Research influence

Industry (4%); Industry income, Patents

International outlook (7.5%); Proportion of international students, Proportion of international staff, International collaboration.

The leading universities in each category are as follows:

Overall; University of Oxford, UK

Teaching; Stanford University, USA

Research Environment; University of Cambridge, UK

Research Quality; Massachusetts Institute of Technology, USA

Industry; University of California San Diego, USA

International Outlook;  University of Sharjah, UAE.

THE reports show that the number of British and American universities has declined this year, while Australia has been especially impacted by a fall in scores for research reputation and international outlook caused by restrictions on international students.

In contrast, leading Chinese universities are coming closer to the top ten, and universities in Saudi Arabia, UAE, and Brazil have improved significantly.
