Times Higher Education (THE) have announced the publication of the second edition of their Sub-Sahara African University Rankings.
The rankings are dominated by English-speaking countries and universities. The country with the highest average score is South Africa, followed by Ghana and Kenya, while Nigeria has the largest number of universities.
The methodology has been changed since last year and includes several metrics not usually included in international rankings. There are now 20 indicators covering five key areas (pillars).
- Resources and Finance (22%)
- Access and Fairness (24%)
- Student Engagement (22%)
- Ethical Leadership (10%)
- Africa Impact (22%).
The data is derived from:
- Institutional data (59.5%)
- Student survey responses (24.5%)
- Bibliometric data from Elsevier (16%).
The top five universities overall are:
- University of Johannesburg, South Africa
- University of Pretoria, South Africa
- University of the Witwatersrand, South Africa
- UGHE-University of Global Health Equity, Rwanda
- University of Ghana.
The universities with the highest scores for the pillars are:

Student Engagement; UGHE-University of Global Health Equity
Ethical Leadership; Landmark University, Nigeria
Africa Impact; Universidade Eduardo Mondlane, Mozambique.
