Shanghai Ranking has published the latest Global Ranking of Academic Subjects. Over 1,900 universities in 96 jurisdictions were ranked in 55 subjects in natural sciences, engineering, life sciences, medical sciences, and social sciences.
There are now four new indicators that measure world-class faculty: winners of international academic awards, highly cited researchers, editors of international academic journals, and leaders of academic organizations. This has led to a significant amount of movement up and down in some of the subjects.
The best performing university was Harvard, which was in first place in 14 subjects, followed by MIT in four subjects, Tsinghua University in three, and Princeton, Chicago, and Oxford with two each.
Universities in the United States appear in the rankings 4,277 times, Chinese universities 3,278 times, and those from the UK 1,560 times.
There are signs of a growing bipolarity in the world of research. Chinese universities predominate in most engineering subjects, while the USA has made a clean sweep of the medical sciences. Natural sciences are led by the UK and the USA, and social sciences by the USA, Western Europe, and Hong Kong. In the life sciences, Harvard is first for biological sciences and human biological sciences, China Agricultural University for agricultural sciences, and Nanjing Agricultural University for Veterinary Sciences.
