The Centre for Science and Technology Studies at Leiden University has announced the release of the second open edition of Leiden Ranking. This is intended to be fully transparent, unlike the Times Higher Education World University published on the same day. Data is derived from the OpenAlex database, which is based on open-access principles.
There are several lists available, including number of publications, publications in the top 1%, 5%, 10%, and 50% of journals, international, industrial, and long-distance collaboration, and open access publications. The default indicator, which appears when landing on the site, is the number of publications over a four-year period.
The new edition has received favourable responses from several universities and agencies. CWTS has indicated that they expect the new methodology to replace the conventional ranking.
There is a high correlation between ranks in the open edition and in the traditional Leiden Ranking, based on publications in the Web of Science, However, it is noticeable that some leading Western universities, including Harvard, the University of Michigan, Johns Hopkins University, Toronto, Oxford, and University College London do significantly better in the open ranking.
On the other hand, Chinese universities, including Fudan, Zhejiang, and Wuhan, and several other leading institutions, tend to do better in the traditional rankings.
