Ivan Sterligov of E-Quadrat Science & Education, a Berlin based consulting firm, has developed a university ranking tool based on visits to Wikipedia, which is considered a valuable measure of public interest. The relevant metric is the median of pageviews for 12 bimonthly periods in 2023-24. The ranking includes degree granting institutions, some specialised post-secondary institutions, and even Eton College, a prestigious independent secondary school.
The upper levels are dominated by the leading American and British universities. Harvard is in first place, followed by Stanford, Oxford, MIT, and Columbia.
It is noticeable that religious institutions, of various denominations, do very well. These include Liberty University, USA, Brigham Young University, USA, the Australian Catholic University, Banaras Hindu University, India, Al-Azhar University, Egypt, and the Islamic University of Madinah, Saudia Arabia.
Specialised musical, artistic and military institutions, such as the Juilliard School, the Vaganova Ballet Academy, Russia, Tokyo University of the Arts, the United States Military Academy, and the Royal Military Academy Sandhurst, are also prominent in these rankings, sometimes running ahead of well-known research universities.
