New Ranking from Iran

The Islamic World Science and Technology Monitoring and Citation Institute (ISC) was established in Azerbaijan in 2008 and is now based in Iran. It has published the Islamic World University Rankings since 2014 and world rankings since 2018.

The performance indicators are grouped into four broad areas:

Research (60% weighting); including publications, citations, normalized citation impact, impact relative to the world, and high-quality articles

Innovation (15%); including patents and industry collaborations

International Activity (15%); including international collaboration, number of collaborating countries, and reputation measured by performance in the THE, QS, and Shanghai world rankings

Education (10%); including faculty student ratio and highly cited faculty.

The overall ranking is headed by Harvard, followed by Stanford, Johns Hopkins, MIT, and Pennsylvania. Looking at the indicator groups, Harvard is in first place for Research and Education and University College London for International Activity. The Innovation Indicator is rather interesting. It is headed by the China University of Petroleum, followed by the Southwest Petroleum University, China. There are also three South Korean universities in the top ten for Innovation.

Universities that have risen significantly since the first ranking in 2018 include the University of California San Francisco, University of Copenhagen, and King Abdullah University of Science and Technology. Among those declining are the University of Tokyo, Lomonosov Moscow State University, and the University of Malaya.

No Israeli universities are listed, although An Najah National University in Nablus is included.
