Clarivate has published their annual list of highly cited researchers who are the leaders in 21 fields or across fields. Altogether there are 6602 researchers. The discipline with the most listed researchers is Clinical Medicine with 453 followed by General Social Sciences with 263 and Chemistry with 240.
These lists are very influential and closely watched to determine the research performance of countries and institutions. They are also the basis for one of the indicators in the Shanghai Academic Ranking of World Universities.
The current lists provide further evidence of the rise of China as a research power and the relative decline of the United States, which continues to contribute the largest number of researchers. There were 2622 researchers from the US this year, which is a decline of 3.6% since 2018. Mainland China is represented by 935 researchers and the United Kingdom by 492.
It is worth noting that many of the top performers in the latest lists are government institutions or research or medical centres such as the Chinese Academy of Sciences, the National Institutes of Health and the Mayo Clinic.
