Highly Cited Researchers List Confirms Asian Ascent, American Decline

Clarivate Analytics have just published the latest edition of their lists of highly cited researchers. The lists now include 6167 researchers in 21 fields, of whom about 2500 are classified as cross-field researchers, and covers articles published over the eleven years between 2009 and 2019. The data is derived from the Essential Science Indicators and InCites. The number of researchers ranges from 482 in Clinical Medicine to 70 in Mathematics.

The lists are extremely influential and prestigious. They are an important indicator in the Shanghai Academic Ranking of World universities and can provide a lucrative boost for researchers and universities in the natural and social sciences.

The USA is still the strongest single research power although the number of researchers is declining.  China continues to gain ground and Australia, Singapore, Israel and Saudi Arabia are also home to significant numbers of elite researchers.

Something very noticeable is that research centres and institutes are now producing a substantial amount of research. The top ten institutions include the Chinese Academy of Sciences, the National Institutes of Health, USA, and the Broad Institute, Cambridge MA, USA.

The top ten institutions are:

  1. Harvard University, USA
  2. Chinese Academy of Sciences
  3. Stanford University, USA
  4. National Institutes of Health, USA
  5. Max Planck Society, Germany
  6. University of California Berkeley, USA
  7. Broad Institute, USA
  8. University of California San Diego, USA
  9. Tsinghua University, China
  10. Washington University of St Louis, USA.
