Clarivate Analytics has announced the publication of the 2024 list of the world’s highly cited researchers, comprising 6,636 individuals in 20 fields and in cross-field research.

The total number of researchers has been reduced since last year by excluding those who contributed to papers with an unusual number of authors, cited themselves too frequently,  or were excessively prolific.

The fields that have the largest number of researchers are Clinical Medicine with 443, Materials Science with 232, and Neuroscience and Behavior with 231.

Institutions that saw significant improvements this year include Zhejiang University, Peking University, City University of Hong Kong, and KU Leuven. Among those who declined were Cornell University and Icahn School of Medicine at Mount Sinai.

It is very noticeable that non-university organizations are playing a leading role in contemporary research. These include the Chinese Academy of Sciences, the National Institutes of Health, the Max Planck Society, the Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Center, and the Mayo Clinic.

The top five countries for number of researchers are :

5. Australia 313.

The top five institutions are:

3. Stanford University, USA
4. Tsinghua University, China
