Shanghai Ranking Consultancy have announced the latest edition of their Best Chinese Universities Ranking (BCUR). The methodology is complex and very different from that of the Academic Ranking of World Universities (ARWU). It varies according to the type of university.
There are thirteen rankings: Public Comprehensive Universities (or main list), Medical Universities, Traditional Medical Universities, Non-government Universities, Non-government Financial and Economic Universities, Non-government Language Universities, Financial and Economic Universities, Art Universities, Language Universities, National (ethnic) Universities, Political Science and Law Universities, Sport Science Universities, Co-operation (international partnership) Universities.
There is currently no English version of the methodology. The Chinese version indicates that there are five groups of metrics as follows:
- Level of running the school
- Subject level
- Faculty size and structure
- Talent development
- Scientific research
- Serving the community
- High-end talents
- Major projects and results
- International competitiveness.
The top five universities, unchanged since last year, in the main list, are:
- Tsinghua University, Beijing
- Peking University, Beijing
- Zhejiang University
- Shanghai Jiao Tong University
- Fudan University, Shanghai.
The top university in each of the other categories is:
Medical universities; Peking Union Medical College
Traditional Chinese medicine universities; Beijing University of Chinese Medicine
Non-government universities; Zhejiang Shuren University
Non-government financial and economic universities; Ningbo University of Finance and Economics
Non-government language universities; Jilin International Studies University
Financial and economic universities; Shanghai University of Finance and Economics
Art universities; Central Academy of Fine Arts
Language universities; Beijing Foreign Studies Universities
Political science and law universities; China University of Political Science and Law
National Universities; Minzu University of China
Sport science universities; Shanghai University of Sport
Cooperation universities; Chinese University of Hong Kong Shenzhen.
