EngiRank 2024 – Ranking of Engineering Universities in Europe

Brussels, 29 October 2024. Technical University of Denmark on the top spot followed by Delft University of Technology (Netherlands), and KU Leuven (Belgium) are the best European engineering schools according to EngiRank 2024. The “Perspektywy” Educational Foundation has published for a second year a ranking of European universities offering engineering programs. The ranking includes 226 higher education institutions in 27 EU countries, and in Switzerland and Norway. The future of international rankings belongs to rankings that are regional and disciplines ‘by subject’ said Waldemar Siwiński, head of EngiRank.

The first edition of EngiRank – the European Ranking of Engineering Programs met with very positive response of European universities, and engineering organizations. EngiRank is a new type of ranking that combines regional and subject-based approaches, it serves as a tool for comparing the quality of engineering and technology programs offered by 226 universities across 27 EU and Switzerland and Norway. Publication of EngiRank followed years of consultations and seminars with academia, industry and engineering organizations.

Waldemar Siwiński, the creator of EngiRank is a pioneer of educational rankings in Poland and international expert on academic rankings, emphasizes that the choice of an engineering was deliberate: “Engineers are crucial for the future of Europe; they are needed to maintain the global competitiveness of the European industry and to ensure sustainable development on our continent.” Europe, In the IT sector alone suffers a a shortage of nearly two million engineers. EngiRank helps industry find best graduates of engineering programs, and assists prospective students in choosing the best university or the best program of study or research.

Next-Generation Ranking

EngiRank, produced in partnership with the international publisher Elsevier, opens a new era in regional “by subject” rankings, utilizing Europe-specific indicators, such as the participation of universities in Erasmus+ and Horizon programs; it Evaluates universities in countries with similar legal and cultural environment, institutions. Also, assessment of institutions engaged in joint research programs (European Research Council) and academic collaboration initiatives (consortia of European universities), ensures a reliable presentation of their strengths and weaknesses.

The methodology developed for EngiRank, in addition to traditional indicators like publications and citations or internationalization, also considers such factors as: collaboration with industry, joint research with business, patents, contributions to SDGs goals and engineering accreditations (ENAEE, ABET). The data for the ranking comes from: Elsevier’s Scopus database, the European Patent Office’s PATSTAT, Horizon Europe, and organizations accrediting engineering studies (ABET, ENAEE).

The top three European universities in EngiRank 2024 are the same as in 2023. The winner is the DTU (Technical University of Denmark), followed by the Dutch Delft University of Technology (2nd place) and Belgian KU Leuven (3rd place). Other universities in the top ten (including those tied) are: ETH Zurich (Switzerland), KTH Royal Institute of Technology (Sweden), Technical University of Munich (Germany), Chalmers University of Technology (Sweden), Polytechnic University of Milan (Italy), RWTH Aachen University (Germany), Swiss Federal Institute of Technology Lausanne (Switzerland), and Norwegian University of Science and Technology (Norway).

Ranking by Subject

Equally important, if not more so, than the overall institutional ranking, are the seven “subject” rankings covering the major fields of engineering, including:

Chemical Engineering

  • Civil Engineering
  • Electrical Engineering, Electronic Engineering, and Information Engineering
  • Environmental Engineering
  • Mechanical Engineering
  • Materials Engineering
  • Medical Engineering
