The University Ranking by Academic Performance (URAP) has been published
annually by the Informatics Institute at the Middle East Technical University,
Ankara, since 2009 and its field-based ranking since 2011. It is based entirely on
public bibliometric data derived from InCItes.
There are six indicators as follows:
- Article; Current scientific productivity 2021 (21% weighting)
- Citation; Research impact 2017-2021 (10%)
- Total document; Scientific productivity 2017-2021 (21%)
- Article impact total; Research quality 2017-2021 (18%)
- Citation impact total; Research quality 2017-2021 (15%)
- International collaboration; international acceptance. 2017-2021 (15%).
The world rankings now include 3000 universities. The Field Based Rankings
now cover 80 subjects. The picture they give of the global ranking scene is one
that is sharply polarised between China and the USA, with the former taking 31
top spots and the latter 28. Chinese universities, including some not so well-
known institutions such as Ocean University and Southeast University,
dominate engineering and technology while Harvard is still preeminent in the
life sciences and medicine.
Outside China and the USA, the University of Oxford is in first place for six
subjects and the University of Amsterdam for four.
Meanwhile Latin American universities such as Universidade de Sao Paulo,
Universidade Estadual de Campinas, and Universidade Estadual Paulista
in Brazil and Universidad Nacional Autonoma de Mexico have performed very
well in subjects such as Agriculture, Food Engineering, Veterinary Science, and
Zoology.
