QS Subject Rankings Provide a Deeper Look

QS (Quacquarelli Symonds) have released the 2023 edition of their World University Rankings by Subject. Altogether, universities in 54 fields and five broad subject areas are ranked. The list of subjects includes three newcomers, data science, history of art, and marketing.

The methodology is quite different from the main QS world rankings and includes the following metrics:

Academic reputation

Employer reputation

Research citations per paper

H-index

International research network.

The weighting for each indicator varies according to subject.

Altogether over 15,000 programmes at over 15,000 have been analysed. The rankings show that the USA has the largest number of top ten university programmes, followed by the UK with 145 and Switzerland with 32. Harvard and the Massachusetts Institute of Technology are the best performing universities.

Outside the US, Oxford, Cambridge, University College London, ETH Zurich and the University of Toronto continue to perform well. In Asia, China and India have improved again while Japan has fallen again.

The Engineering and Technology rankings show the increasing diversity of research-intensive universities in these intensive fields. The upper ranks include institutions from South Korea, Hong Kong, Russia, Mexico, Taiwan, Chile, Saudi Arabia, and Malaysia.
