US News has released the latest edition of its Best Global Universities rankings.

These rankings comprise 13 research-related indicators: Global research reputation, Regional research reputation, Publications, Books, Conferences, Normalized citation impact, Total citations, Number of publications among 10% most cited, Percentage of total publications among 10% most cited, International collaboration relative to country, International collaboration, Number of papers among 1% most cited, Percentage of papers among 1% most cited.

There are few surprises in the overall rankings. The top universities in the world and in each region are as follows:

  • World and North America; Harvard University
  • Africa; University of Cape Town
  • Asia; Tsinghua University
  • Australia/ New Zealand; University of Sydney
  • Latin America; Universidade de Sao Paulo.

These rankings show that a massive global divide when it comes to subject level. The elite US schools still dominate medicine, biology, and the social sciences. Harvard remains in first place for, among others, Biology and Biochemistry, Clinical Medicine, Business and Finance, and Social Sciences and Public Health.

In contrast, East Asian universities lead for engineering and physical and chemical sciences. Tsinghua University is first for Computer Science, Chemistry, and Materials Science, Nanyang Technological University for Electrical and Electronic Engineering, Peking University for Environment/Ecology.
