The SCImago Institutions Rankings for 2023 have been published by the SCImago Lab, a Spanish consulting company. They now cover over 8,000 institutions, including universities, government agencies, health organisations, companies, and non-profit organisations.

Institutions are ranked according to three groups of criteria:

Research; including eleven measures of publications and citations derived from Scopus (50%)

Innovation; three measures based on patents derived from PATSTAT (30%)

Societal Impact; altmetrics, number of backlinks, and web size (20%).

The current ranking shows continuing advance for Chinese universities and companies. Fields such as Computer Science, Energy, Aerospace Engineering, and Industrial Engineering are dominated by Chinese institutions although US and European research centres and Multinational companies continue to perform well in some areas.

The overall top three institutions are:

1. Chinese Academy of Sciences
2. Chinese Ministry of Education
3. Centre National de la Recherche Scientifique, France

The top three for Research are:

1. Chinese Ministry of Education
2. Chinese Academy of Sciences
3. Centre National de la Recherche Scientifique

The top three for Innovation are:

1. Chinese Academy of Sciences
2. State Grid Corporation of China
3. Chinese Ministry of Education

The top three for Societal Impact are:

1. Facebook Inc
2. Facebook Inc, USA
3. Centre National de la Recherche Scientifique
