The US News has been in the ranking business for nearly four decades. Despite significant criticism and methodological changes “America’s Best Colleges” has been closely followed by students, parents, and other stakeholders.
Publication of the 2022-23 edition was overshadowed by the demotion of Columbia University from second place to eighteenth following accusations that it had submitted inflated data concerning class size and faculty qualifications.
Perhaps more significant is the attempt of the US News to adjust to the growing trend in American higher education to move away from the use of standardised tests for student admissions. There have also been changes in the collection of data for faculty degrees and salaries and class size.
Among national universities this year first place goes to Princeton, followed by MIT, Harvard, Stanford, and Yale.
In the various categories, the leaders are:
Liberal Arts Colleges; Williams College, Massachusetts
Best Value Schools; Harvard University, Massachusetts
Regional Universities North; Providence College, Rhode Island
Regional Universities South; Rollins College, Florida
Regional Universities Midwest; Butler University, Indiana
Regional universities West; University of Portland, Oregon
Historically Black Colleges and Universities; Spelman College, Gorgia
Best Undergraduate Business Programs; University of Pennsylvania.
