Around the world, private institutions account for a large and growing part of the higher education sector. Unfortunately, most of them have been neglected by the mainstream global rankings which have tended to focus on large research-orientated universities.
AppliedHE of Singapore has just announced the first edition of its ranking of private universities in the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN). Twenty-nine universities from Cambodia, Indonesia, Malaysia, the Philippines, Thailand, and Vietnam have been ranked and it is hoped that future editions will cover the whole of Asia. The methodology includes the following indicators: Teaching and Learning, Research, Employability, Community Engagement, Internationalisation, and Institutional Reputation.
The top ten universities overall are:
- Bina Nusantara University, Indonesia
- Universiti Tenaga Nasional, Malaysia
- Universitas Islam Indonesia
- University of Santo Tomas, Philippines
- Universitas Telkom, Indonesia.
- Universitas Muhammadiyah Malang, Indonesia
- Krirk University, Thailand
- Duy Tan University, Vietnam
- SEGi University, Malaysia
- Universitas Teknokrat Indonesia.
