The Scimago Institutions rankings are produced by the Spanish National Research Council. They have a distinctive methodology with three sets of indicators clustered in three groups.
Research (50%); Normalised Impact, Excellence with Leadership, Output, Journals, Excellence, High Quality Publications, International Collaboration, Open Access, Scientific Talent Pool
Innovation (30%); Innovative Knowledge, Patents, Technological Impact; data derived from PATSTAT.
Societal (20%); Altmetrics, Inbound Links, Web Size.
The innovation indicators are the most interesting group. They clearly show that innovation leadership is passing away from western universities to big corporations and government research centers, many of them multinational. The contribution of the university sector, with a few exceptions is now led by the USA and China. The first place in all sectors for innovation is held by the Chinese Academy of Sciences and the leading university is the Harvard-MIT Division of Health Sciences and Technology.
Among universities the top twenty places for innovation are shared between the USA and China. Outside these two countries, the leading universities are Nanyang Technological University, Singapore, the National University of Singapore, the Korean Advanced Institute of Science and Technology and Oxford University.
