Maclean’s Canadian Rankings

The latest rankings of Canadian universities and colleges by the magazine Maclean’s have been published. The rankings are divided into three categories: Medical/doctoral universities that offer doctoral programmes and medical courses, Comprehensive universities that provide undergraduate and postgraduate programmes and do a significant amount of research, and Primarily Undergraduate institutions that emphasise undergraduate teaching rather than research or postgraduate studies.

The methodology is based on five broad categories:

Students (28%); indicators include national academic awards, student-faculty ratio and student satisfaction

Faculty (20%); awards and research grants

Resources (22%); funds per student, research funds, budget for library services, and library resources for acquisitions

Student support (15%) student services and scholarships and bursaries

Reputation (15%) based on a survey of faculty, university administrators and business leaders.

The top five institutions in each category are:

Medical/doctoral universities

  1. McGill University
  2. University of Toronto
  3. University of British Columbia
  4. McMaster University
  5. Queen’s University

Comprehensive Universities

  1. Simon Fraser University
  2. University of Victoria
  3. University of Waterloo
  4. University of Guelph
  5. Carleton University

Primarily Undergraduate Universities

  1. Mount Allison University
  2. Lethbridge University
  3. Acadia University
  4. Saint Mary’s University
  5. University of Northern British Columbia.
