Times Higher Education (THE) has announced the results of its second global impact rankings. These rankings measure universities’ contribution to the 17 Sustainable Development Goals announced by the United Nations. These include no poverty, zero hunger, good health and well-being, quality education, and gender equality. THE claims that the release of these rankings should be “an almighty global celebration.”

The biggest response to these rankings has been from Japan with 63 representatives although only three of them managed to reach the top one hundred. Russia, the UK and the USA are also well represented as is the Arab Region with 18 universities from Iraq and 23 from Egypt. There are only a few Chinese and Indonesian universities represented. In contrast the UI GreenMetric Rankings included 75 Indonesian universities.

The best performing country is Australia which has four universities in the top ten and three in the top five.
