SCImago Rankings Measure Contributions to Innovation

The SCImago Institutions Rankings (SIR) are published by the SCImago Lab, now part of a Spanish consulting company. They provide data on research, innovation and societal impact and include universities, companies, public agencies, companies, and research centres.

SCImago provides overall, research, innovation, and societal rankings. The research rankings are based on publications and citations and the innovation rankings on patents. The “Societal Factor” includes website size, inbound links, and altmetrics.

The most interesting part of the latest edition is the Innovation section which shows that companies, many of them multinational, and public research agencies are pulling ahead of Western universities.

The top ten institutions for innovation in all subject areas this year are:

  1. Chinese Academy of Sciences
  2. State Grid Corporation of China
  3. Deep Mind Technologies Ltd, UK
  4. Ministry of Education of the People’s Republic of China
  5. Samsung Corp
  6. Toyota Group
  7. Ionis Pharmaceuticals, USA
  8. LG Corporation
  9. Alphabet Inc
  10. Google Inc, USA.

The best performing university for innovation is Tsinghua in 11th place while Harvard is 20th.

In the research rankings the Chinese Academy of Sciences is in first place, followed by the Chinese Ministry of Education and the Centre National de la Recherche Scientifique (CNRS) of France. The first place in the Societal ranking is held by Facebook, USA, followed by Facebook and CNRS.
