Recent events have increased the importance of social media in tertiary education. The Australian based search engine UniRank (formerly ic4u) has produced several global rankings of universities based on their social media presence. The latest of these is the 2020 YouTube University Ranking.
Guide2Research, a portal of computer science research, has published the latest edition of its University Ranking for Computer Science and Electronics.
African universities, with the exception of a few in South Africa and Egypt, have not performed well in the better-known global rankings and in some cases have not been ranked at all. In consequence, African academics and journalists have often resorted to constructing rankings by extracting data from Webometrics and UniRank.

Universitas 21 has announced the “ninth and final” ranking of national higher education systems which is based on four groups of indicators: Resources, Environment, Connectivity and Output. Universitas 21 is a network of research universities now consisting of 27 universities in 18 countries. It is concerned with student employability, researcher engagement and educational innovation among other topics.
The Moscow based Round University Rankings use bibliometric and survey data from Clarivate Analytics combined with information from the institutions. There are 20 indicators grouped in 4 clusters: Teaching (40% weighting), Research (40%), International Diversity (10%), and Financial Sustainability (10%). Altogether 828 universities are ranked.
The current crisis has spurred a massive shift to online teaching and learning. The publication of the QS online MBA rankings is therefore especially appropriate.
