It seems that there is a trend towards away from global rankings towards regional rankings. Recently QS introduced a new ranking for Sub-Saharan Africa and now Times Higher Education (THE) has announced that it is preparing Central Eurasian rankings.
For the moments it has created a ranking of universities in the Organization of Turkic States. Full members are Azerbaijan, Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, Türkiye, and Uzbekistan, while Hungary, Turkmenistan, and Northern Cyprus are observers. THE is proposing consultations in the region and has invited universities to register their interest.
THE has produced a pilot ranking based on the indicators in the current World University Rankings, which are grouped in five pillars, Teaching, Research Environment, Research Quality, Industry, and International Outlook. They are dominated by Türkiye, which takes eight of the top places.
The top five universities are:
1. Koç University, Türkiye
2. Middle East Technical University, Türkiye
3. Sabanci University, Türkiye
4= Boğaziçi University, Türkiye
4= Nazarbayev University, Kazakhstan.
