The SCImag0 Institutions Rankings are published by the SCImago Research Group, which comprises the Spanish National Research Council and several Spanish universities. They are noteworthy for including data on innovation and societal impact and for assessing over 10,000 institutions including universities, government agencies, health organisations, companies and non-profit groups.

The current methodology comprises:

  • Research (weighting 50%); Normalized Impact, Excellence with Leadership, Output, Scientific Leadership, Not Own Journals, Journals, Excellence, High Quality Publications, International Collaboration, Open Access, Scientific Talent Pool
  • Innovation (30%); Innovative Knowledge, Patents, Technological Impact
  • Societal (20%); Media Mentions, Web Size, Authority Score, Sustainable Development Goals, Female Scientific Talent Pool, Impact in Public Policy.

The general rankings show that national research centres, government organisations, and companies are now playing a major role in research and are overtaking the traditional elite universities. First place is held by the Chinese Ministry of Education, followed by the Chinese Academy of Sciences and the French Centre National de la Recherche Scientifique. The top twenty includes Google International LLC, the State Grid Corporation of China, Harvard Medical School, the American Cancer Society, and the US Department of Health & Human Services. 

The top institution in each category is:

  • Government; Ministry of Education, China
  • Health; International Agency for Research on Cancer, France
  • Universities; Harvard University, USA
  • Companies; Google International LLC
  • Non-profit; Allen Institute for Artificial Intelligence, USA.

SCImago note that they have identified several universities with excessive rates of self-citation and self-referencing and may exclude them from future rankings.
