The Shanghai Ranking consultancy released the latest edition of its Global Ranking of Sports Science Schools and Departments in December. The ranking measures research activity in sports science and does not refer to teaching, graduate careers, or participation in sport events.
The methodology comprises the following metrics:

- Citations to Papers (20%)
- Citations per Paper (40%)

The ranking shows that English-speaking and northern European universities dominate sports-related research activity. Out of 300 universities, 52 are located in the USA, 37 in the UK, 23 in Canada, and 21 in Australia. China, Germany, and Brazil are also well represented.
