QS Quacquarelli Symonds (QS) have released the latest edition of their Asian university rankings. The biggest change since last year is the rise of the University of Hong Kong to first place, overtaking Peking University.

The methodology of these rankings differs significantly from the QS World University Rankings. Instead of Citations per Faculty they include Papers per Faculty and Citations per Paper.

In addition, the Asian rankings include metrics for Staff with PhD, International Research, and Inbound and Outbound Exchange Students.

Hong Kong universities have done very well this year, taking five of the top ten places. Scores for the various metrics have produced some surprising results. For example, the top score for Faculty Student Ratio goes to Aga Khan University, Pakistan, while Maulana Abul Kalam Azad University of Technology, India, leads for papers per faculty, Asian University for Women, Bangladesh, for Citations per Paper, and Al Madinah International University, Malaysia, for International Students. It is likely that this will cause some questions, especially in China.

The top ten universities are:

1.   University of Hong Kong

2.   Peking University, China

3= Nanyang Technological University, Singapore

3= National University Singapore

5.   Fudan University, China

6.   Hong Kong University of Science and Technology

7= City University of Hong Kong

7= Chinese University of Hong Kong

9.   Tsinghua University

10. Hong Kong Polytechnic University.
