The National Institutional Ranking Framework was established by the Indian government in 2015, partly in response to dissatisfaction with the major global rankings.
The current rankings cover eleven categories: overall, universities, colleges, engineering, management, pharmacy, law, medical, architecture, dental and research.
There are 19 indicators for the overall rankings grouped in five groups:
- Teaching, Learning and Resources
- Research and Professional Practice
- Graduation Outcomes
- Outreach and Inclusivity
- Peer Perception.
These rankings have been criticized for manipulation or even corruption in the collection of institutional data. A novel feature of this year’s edition is that universities are penalized for retractions, which has affected institutions such as Anna University and Saveetha Dental College.
The top universities in each category are:
- Overall; Indian Institute of Technology Madras
- Universities; India Institute of Science
- Colleges; Hindu College
- Research Institutions; Indian Institute of Science
- Engineering; Indian Institute of Technology Madras
- Management; Indian Institute of Management Ahmedabad
- Pharmacy; Jamia Hamdard
