The Arab Ranking for Universities is published by the Arab Ranking for Universities Council in conjunction with the League of Arab States, the Association of Arab Universities, and the Arab League Educational, Cultural, and Scientific Organization.
This ranking represents the growing trend for independent regional rankings including the AppliedHE Southeast private and public university rankings and the European Ranking of Engineering Universities.
The methodology is based on a total of 36 indicators equally distributed across four categories:
- Education and Learning (Quality of Teaching) (300 points)
- Scientific Research (Quantity and Quality of Research Output) (400 points)
- Creativity, Entrepreneurship, and Innovation (150 points)
- International and Local Collaboration and Community Service (150 points).
It is noticeable that participation has been quite limited, especially in parts of North Africa and Lebanon. There are only three universities from Morocco, six from Algeria, two from Lebanon, and one from Sudan. In contrast, the ranking has been very popular in Iraq, Jordan and Egypt. Some reputable institutions are absent, including King Abdulaziz University, King Fahd University of Petroleum and Minerals, the American University of Beirut, the American University in Cairo, and Qatar University.
The top five universities in the current ranking are:
1. King Saud University, Saudi Arabia
2. United Arab Emirates University
3. Sultan Qaboos University, Oman
4. University of Jordan
5. Abu Dhabi University, United Arab Emirates.
