The latest edition of the Times Higher Education (THE) World University Rankings has just been announced. There are few dramatic changes this year. Oxford remains in first place, as it has for the last decade, while the rise of leading Mainland Chinese universities appears to have levelled off.
In contrast, South Korean and Hong Kong Universities continue to improve and Australia has recovered from financial problems resulting from the pandemic and restrictions on international education.
The methodology of these rankings is based on five “pillars of evaluation”:
- Teaching; teaching reputation, staff student ratio, doctorate bachelor’s ratio, doctorate academic staff ratio, institutional income
- Research Environment; research reputation, research income, research productivity
- Research Quality; citation impact, research strength, research excellence, research influence
- Industry; industry income, patents
- International Outlook; international students, international staff, international collaboration.
The top universities int the above categories are:
- Overall; University of Oxford, UK
- Teaching; Massachusetts Institute of Technology, USA
- Research Environment, Harvard University, USA
- Research Quality; Massachusetts Institute of Technology
- Industry, Beihang University, China
- International Outlook; Ajman University, UAE.
