The Islamic World Science Citation Center (ISC) in Teheran, Iran, was established in 2008 and is responsible for indexing journals, the assessment of research networks, preparing reports and workshops, and publishing university rankings.

The ISC currently publishes World and Islamic World University Rankings with these indicators:

  • Research (60%) including publications and citations
  • Innovation (15%) including patents and industry collaborations
  • Education (10%) including faculty student ratio and highly cited faculty
  • International Activity (15%) including international collaboration, number of collaborators, and international reputation.

The Islamic World Rankings are dominated by just a few countries. The top four places are held by four Saudi universities: King Abdulaziz University, King Abdullah University of Science and Technology, King Saud University, and King Fahd University of Petroleum and Minerals. Other countries with universities that perform well are Malaysia, Egypt, Qatar, Iran, and Pakistan.
