Clarivate have published the latest edition of the highly cited researchers list. This is regarded as comprising the elite of the world’s researchers and is an indicator in the Shanghai Academic Ranking of World Universities (ARWU).
A total of 7,131 Highly Cited Researchers awards has been given to 6,868 individual researchers. The largest number of awards, 3,569, have gone to cross-field researchers. The fields with the greatest representation are Clinical Medicine with 379 researchers, Biology and Biochemistry with 314, and the Social Sciences with 260.
The largest number of awards have been given to researchers located in the USA, 2,670, followed by Mainland China 1,406, the United Kingdom 570, Germany 363, and Australia 312.
The ten leading institutions are:

6. National Institutes of Health, USA 84

Clarivate has instituted strict rules to maintain research integrity. A total of 432 potential awards were excluded for “hyperprolific authorships.” The majority were affiliated to Mainland China institutions, and a large number also work in the USA. In addition, papers with more than thirty authors were excluded from analysis. Retracted papers were not counted and authors associated with excessive self-citation or mutual citation patterns were excluded.
Clarivate have reinstated the Mathematics category, claiming that the new procedures mean that it is more diverse and includes “well-known mathematicians and statisticians, many of whom have been awarded top prizes reflecting significant peer recognition.”
The result of increasingly rigorous selection procedures is that the number of researchers affiliated with American universities has increased and the number affiliated with Mainland China institutions, contrary to most recent rankings.
