The UI GreenMetric World University Rankings published by Universitas Indonesia are now in their 15th year. They are based on an annual survey that measures universities’ commitment to sustainability.
There are six criteria:
- Settings and Infrastructure (15% weighting)
- Energy and Climate Change (21%)
- Waste (18%)
- Water (10%)
- Transportation (18%)
- Education and Research (18%).
Altogether, 1,477 universities participated in this year’s rankings. Participation was robust in Southeast and South Asia, Latin America, and the Middle East. The best represented country was Indonesia with 183 participants, followed by Pakistan with 84, Iraq with 81, the Philippines with 63, Malaysia with 61 and Thailand with 59. There were no Canadian universities and only 12 from the United States, four from the United Kingdom and one from China.
Overall, the top five universities are:
- Wageningen University and Research, Netherlands
- Nottingham Trent University, UK
- University of Groningen, Netherlands
- University College Cork, Ireland
- Universidade de São Paulo, Brazil.
The top universities in the six criteria are:
- Settings and Infrastructure; Universidade de São Paulo
- Energy and Climate Change; University of Kashan, Iran
- Waste; University of Kashan
- Water; University of Kashan
- Transportation; Leiden University, Netherlands
- Education and Research; Universita di Bologna, Italy.
