IREG has just completed a conference on Artificial Intelligence (AI) altering HE and Rankings in Bucharest, organized in cooperation with the Ministry of Education of Romania, SNSPA University, and sponsorship of Elsevier.
The conference discussed the consequences of the rise of AI on higher education and global research, including its direct and indirect impact on university rankings. Waldemar Siwinski, President of IREG Observatory, Ligia Deca, Romanian Minister of Education, and Remus Pricopie, the Rector of SNSPA delivered opening addresses.
Keynote speakers were Piotr Sankowki, professor of University of Warsaw, Josep M. Garell, President of European University Adsociation and M’hamed Aisati, Vice President of Elsevier.T here were speakers from Romania, Poland, Canada, Germany, the Netherlands, the European Union, Hungary, Indonesia, the UAE, the USA, the UK, Ukraine, Qatar, Uzbekistan, India, Kazakhstan, Hungary, and Denmark.
A broad range of topics included how AI is changing the world, its use to improve rankings, its influence on higher education, the future direction of national and international university rankings, ranking strategies, universities, and sustainable development goals.
One informative and insightful session dealt with the challenges of using AI to enhance rankings while taking account of ethical, financial, and infrastructure concerns.
Although there was much debate about various aspects of AI, there was general agreement that things were going to get very interesting.
