The Webometrics Ranking of World Universities is published by the Cybermetrics Lab of the Consejo Superior de Investigaciones Científicas (CSIC) in Madrid.
It is by far the most inclusive of the global rankings and now ranks over 30,000 universities according to research output and web impact. Currently, there are three indicators:
- Visibility (50%); number of external networks linking to webpages, data from Majestic
- Transparency or Openness (10%); number of citations from top 310 authors (excluding top 20), data from Google Scholar Profiles
- Excellence or Scholar (40%); number of papers in the 10% most cited in 27 disciplines, data from Scimago.
The overall rankings continue to be led by US, British, and Canadian universities. Harvard is still in first place, followed by Stanford, MIT, Oxford and Berkeley.
It is noticeable that Chinese universities perform extremely well for Excellence but much less so for Visibility and Transparency.
The top five for Excellence are:
- Harvard University, USA
- University of Chinese Academy of Sciences
- Tsinghua University, China
- Stanford University, USA
- Zhejiang University.
The top five for Impact are:
- Harvard University
- Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT), USA
- Stanford University
- University of California Berkeley, USA
- Cornell University, USA.
