Times Higher Education (THE) has published the latest edition of its reputation rankings. This is based on a survey of researchers who were published in journals indexed in the Scopus database over a five-year period. Before 2022 this was conducted by Elsevier but has since been brought in-house.
The survey was conducted between October 2022 and January 2023 and received 39,796 responses. It will be included as an indicator in the THE World University Rankings, scheduled for publication later this year.
At the top, there is little change; the top ten is the same as last year, except that Tsinghua University has moved up a notch to replace Yale in eighth place.
The top five universities are:
- Harvard University
- Massachusetts Institute of Technology
- Stanford University
- University of Oxford
- University of Cambridge.
Further down, there are some significant changes. Most Chinese universities have risen since last year, although Shanghai Jiao Tong University has gone from 28th place to 43rd and Fudan University from 39th to the 51=60 band.
The most interesting aspect of the rankings, which is likely to cause some debate, is the rapid ascent of some Middle Eastern universities. These include the American University of the Middle East, Kuwait, Abu Dhabi University, Al Ain University, and Qassim University, Saudi Arabia. These results are quite different from those produced by the surveys conducted by US News and QS and will probably be greeted with some scepticism by those familiar with the region.
