Rankometer is a composite global university ranking produced by AppliedHE of Singapore. It combines the ranks of universities in five of the better-known rankings: Times Higher Education (THE) World University Rankings, QS World University Rankings, the Shanghai Academic Ranking of World Universities, Ranking Web of Universities (Webometrics), and Leiden Ranking (percentage of publications in top 10% of their field).
Rankometer is based on the observation that the various rankings use different methodologies and may produce significantly different results. For example, Oxford is in first place in THE and 13th in Leiden Rankings, the University of Washington is 80th in QS and 7th in Webometrics, the National Autonomous University of Mexico is 104th in QS and 900th in THE. A composite ranking can therefore give a more reliable and stable picture than any single table.
The second edition of Rankometer, which has just been announced, shows a few significant changes. Columbia University has entered the top ten displacing California Institute of Technology. There are also a number of new arrivals including Ulsan National Institute of Science and Technology, South Korea, Beijing University of Chemical Technology, and the University of Alaska Fairbanks.
The number of universities from Canada, Mainland China, Japan, South Korea, and Spain has increased while those from the USA and Germany have declined.
At the very top, the order is quite familiar with Harvard in first place, followed by the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, Stanford, Oxford, and Cambridge.
