The National Academy of Inventors and the Intellectual Property Owners Association have published the latest edition of their ranking of universities granted US utility patents in 2020. The data is from the US Patent and Trademark Office.
US universities hold the lead for the time being, with the first eight places going to American universities or state-wide university systems. Tsinghua University is in ninth place and other Asian universities such as Korea Advanced Institute of Science and Technology (KAIST), Seoul National University, City University of Hong Kong, and Tohoku University have also made a strong showing.
It is also noticeable that the Middle East is becoming a major centre of innovation represented here by King Fahad University of Petroleum and Minerals, King Abdulaziz University, King Saud University, the Hebrew University of Jerusalem and Tel Aviv University.
The top ten universities or systems are:

- Johns Hopkins University
- Purdue Research Foundation
- Wisconsin Alumni Research Foundation
- California Institute of Technology
- Tsinghua University
- Harvard College, President and Fellows.
