Times Higher Education (THE) has published the latest edition of its Emerging Economies Rankings.
Inclusion in the rankings is determined by the FTSE (Financial Times Stock Exchange 100 Index) classification which has three categories:
Advanced emerging such as Brazil, Czechia and Greece
Secondary emerging such as Chile, China and Colombia
Frontier such as Bahrain, Bangladesh and Botswana.
The methodology is similar to that of the THE World University Rankings but the weighting for Citations (research impact) has been reduced while those for Industry Income and International Orientation have been increased.
The rankings are dominated by Mainland China which holds seven of the top ten spots. Tsinghua University is in first place followed by Peking, Zhejiang, Fudan, and Shanghai Jiao Tong University. Among non-Mainland Chinese universities Lomonosov Moscow State university, Russia, is in sixth place, National Taiwan University eighth, University of Cape Town tenth, University of Sāo Paulo, Brazil, thirteenth and the Indian Institute of Science fourteenth.
