Rating and Ranking System for Vietnamese and Southeast Asian Universities

The Vietnam Ministry of Education and Training has set up the University Performance Metrics system to assess the ability of the country’s universities and those in other South East Asian countries to prepare for the fourth Industrial Revolution.

It is only recently that Vietnam has become interested in university rankings and so far its performance has not been very impressive. There are, for example, no Vietnamese universities in the Shanghai ranking’s top 500.

The Ranking Core of the stem includes eight Rating categories: Strategic Governance, Education, Research, Innovation, Innovation, Ecosystem, IT Infrastructure, Internationalisation, and Community Services.

There are also five metrics: Entrepreneurship, Innovation, Digital Transformation, Student Mobility, and Ethical Value.

Universities are awarded a five-star rating if they have a good national reputation and are recognised internationally, four stars if they are well known nationally and regionally, and three stars if they have a significant national role and can contribute to regional student mobility.

In 2020 four research universities were awarded five stars. They are:

  • Vietnam National University of Science
  • Vietnam University of Engineering and Technology
  • Hanoi University of Science and Technology, Vietnam
  • Kasetsarts University, Thailand.

Six applied universities were awarded five stars:

  • Foreign Trade University, Vietnam
  • Diplomatic Academy of Vietnam
  • West Visayas State University, Philippines
  • Thu Dau Mot University, Vietnam
  • Quy Nhon University, Vietnam
  • Nguyen That Tanh University, Vietnam.
