The current crisis has spurred a massive expansion in online learning throughout the world. The website Class Central has been publishing annual rankings of online courses based on user ratings and enrolments. It has now produced an analysis of online courses presented by the universities that have been rated as best for computer science.
The basic method is to look at those universities ranked in the computer science subject rankings of Times Higher Education (THE) World University Rankings, the QS World University Rankings, and the Shanghai Academic Ranking of World Universities. A composite list was created by calculating the average rank in the three rankings, selecting the top fifty that offer online courses and importing data from Class Central’s database.
The top ten universities are:
- Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT)
- Stanford University
- Carnegie Mellon University
- University of Oxford
- ETH Zurich
- Harvard University
- Princeton University
- Tsinghua University
- University of California Los Angeles
- University of Cambridge.
In addition, the report lists 500 online courses at the universities listed in the rankings including offerings from the University of Toronto, Harvard University, Hong Kong University of Science and Technology, and the University of Michigan.
