Times Higher Education (THE) has just published a ranking of universities in the World’s emerging economies derived from data collected for their world rankings. The same indicators are used with different weightings: that for Citations has been reduced from 30% to 20% and that for Innovation (Industry Income) and International Outlook has been increased.
The ranking is restricted to those countries classified by the Financial Times Stock Exchange (FTSE) as “advanced emerging”, “secondary emerging,” and “frontier.”
The dominant power in the emerging economies is clearly China which holds the top four places and seven in the top ten. The other BRICS countries have done quite well. Lomonosov Moscow State University is 5th, the University of Cape Town 10th , the University of São Paulo 14th, and The Indian Institute of Science 16th.
The top ten universities are:
- Tsinghua University, China
- Peking University, China
- Zhejiang University, China
- University of Science and Technology of China
- Lomonosov Moscow State University
- Shanghai Jiao Tong University, China
- Fudan University, China
- National Taiwan University
- Nanjing University, China
- University of Cape Town, South Africa.
The top universities in each of the five “pillars” are:
Citations; Aswan University, Egypt
Industry income; Anadolu University, Turkey
International Outlook; Qatar University
Research; Tsinghua University
Teaching; Peking University.
